Mr. Maps
Mr. Maps are a five-piece instrumental rock band from Brisbane, Australia.
Since their inception in 2007, Mr. Maps have quickly earned a reputation for transcendental live performances showcasing complex layers of bass, drums and guitar lifted by lush piano and cello, and punctuated by electronic glitches and tones. Mr. Maps’ compositions are experimental and meticulous with an air of optimism and beauty, blending math-rock with elements of New York post-classical and electronics.
Mr. Maps released their debut album Wire Empire on January 15, 2011. Wire Empire is an instrumental opus, flittering between the delicate and the crushingly huge. It is a complex masterpiece that retains Mr. Maps’ signature combination of mathematical rhythms and lush sweeping melodies, whilst boasting a more defined and resolute sound.
Wire Empire spent about a year in production, tracked in the peaceful woods of Mt Cotton by Steve Bartlett, transformed by producers and mix engineers Joss Rigby and Andrei Maberley, and polished by celebrated New York mastering engineer, Scott Hull.
The album has already started to gather hype, with airplay on Triple J, fBI, RTRfm, RRR, and 4zzz, and earning “Album of the Week” in Time Off Magazine.
Members of Mr. Maps have been key players in the development of Lofly Recordings, an emerging Brisbane music label, and help to curate Hangar, Brisbane’s premier underground music event.
Previous accolades for the band have included high praise for their 2009 double-EP release, Mimicry of Lines and Light, with two of the songs nominated as finalists in the prestigious Q Song Awards. They have performed at high profile events such as Valley Fiesta and 2high Festival, and taken their live show to enthusiastic audiences in NSW and VIC.
